Zdzislawa Markiewicz (Manterys) was born in Miroszów. She attended primary school in Miroszów, Racławice and Parkoszowice. The subjects which were forbidden during the German occupation, from the first and second grade high school, she gained in clandestine classes. After World War II she began humanistic studies at the Tadeusz Kościuszko High School from which she matriculated.
Zdzisława began a two-year course in the school of nursing in Łódź and on its completion became a qualified nurse. She was assigned to compulsory duties at a Warsaw hospital. She resided with her aunt Irena Manterys (20-10-1913 – 21-7-1976) in Ursus.
In 1954 Zdzisława married engineer Józef Markiewicz from Działoszyce. They lived near his work place in Sosnowiec and later in Ząbkowice near Będzin. She started work there in the local health centre where she worked until her retirement.
Her husband died in 1972, leaving her with the 17 year-old daughter Elżbieta and 16 year-old son Marek. Thanks to her organisational skills and hard work she overcame all her difficulties. Elżbieta graduated from the Faculty of Sanitary at Kraków University of Technology and worked in Environmental Protection. Marek graduated from the Fine Arts Academy in Katowice and works there as a teacher.
Zdzisława as a child was a frail and vulnerable to all kinds of disease, which she fortunately overcame with age. She I very sensitive to all human suffering, and values life and family ties above all.
