Boleslaus (William) Manterys (25-8-1913 – 1-1980) was born in Chicago, USA.
He served in the US Merchant Marine in WWII and was listed on the ship SS Samuel Jordan Kirkwood. In 1943, after delivering more than 10,000 tons of fuel for tanks in North Africa and making its way across the Atlantic, his ship was torpedoed by a German submarine U-195 and lost off Ascension Island. Boleslaus survived and was rescued by the SS Santa Teresa, which was sailing from the Takoradi, Ghana, in June 1943 to New York and arrived there on 4 July 1943.
It is possible that during this time he passed through Germany, as it is known that a Manterys from the USA tried to make contact from there with his father’s family in Poland.
